Town Archives
image comment: town´s seal (1447)
The town archive of Hameln is the oldest cultural organisation in the town (first mentioned in 1633) and the safe-keeping place for the important documents of the town council, which have to be kept safe permanently for legal and historical reasons.
For this reason, the town archive is sometimes labelled "The Town’s Memory". The archive displays a large number of collections of aspects of the towns history (e. g. photos, posters, newspapers) and it also holds private documents (e. g. assets of significant personalities, documents from clubs and companies), if they are significant to the history of the town.
However, the town archive doesn’t just contain the archive section, in which it cares for storage, maintenance and restoration of its contents, but it also has to open up the contents of the archive and make it available for the public. Everyone has the right to use the town archive, by personal visit or through written and telephone inquiries, as long as the identity and private data of the third party is protected.
The town archive also promotes and supports town history research and the displaying of results arising from this research for the public (e. g. exhibitions, publications, talks).
