The history of money from Hameln dates back to 1234, when the Abbot of Fulda designated Hameln as a coin-making town.

But so-called ‘Brakteaten’, hollow one-sided silver pfennigs, were already being knocked-out in Hameln under Abbot Markward I of Fulda (1150–1165).

A new era started in Hameln in 1543 with the dating of money. ‘Thalers’. ‘Mariengroschen’, ‘Körtlinge’ and ‘Pfennige’ were being produced in large numbers in Hameln.

After having overcome the "Kipper and Wipper" times (a type of inflation) in 1618-1621, good coins were made in Hameln once again.

The practice of minting ended in Hameln in 1673. The last coin-maker of Hameln laid down his coin-hammer and relocated his services to Hildesheim.
