Hameln Pottery

In the autumn of 1919 Gertrud Kraut founded a pottery in the province of Eggersen near Hameln with the aim of "
producing affordable art for the common man..." Just one year later, the products from Hamelns pottery were already being displayed and observed by the public as it was part of the "Lower-Germany Art Exhibition".

The promotion of arts and crafts in Hameln was aided greatly when the pottery moved to the town in the spring of 1922; Soon after it moved, the company became a public limited company and at the same time the new hallmark, of the stylised rat with H.T. (Hamelner Töpferei) stamped on it, was introduced.

Up until July/August 1924, Gertrud Kraut was responsible for the artistic direction. Hameln pottery was displayed in many exhibitions in places such as Munich, Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart and Leipzig. In 1925, after Gertrud Kraut had retired from the company, Klaus and Hildegard Delius took over the overall management a distinct change in form and glazing has now been established.

The name Delius has been associated with the pottery ever since. After the death of her husband Klaus, Hildegard took over the managerial reigns herself and then passed them down to her sons Nikolaus and Peter in 1955.
The increasing costs of the predominately manual production of the pottery meant that the company was no longer making a profit; the firm ceased production in 1966.
