When admiring these restored stone- and wooden-framed houses built in the Weser Renaissance and other styles, it will be hard to realize that this splendour is the result of 25 years of reconstruction.
During this whole period the town - supported by the national and federal governments, together with numerous property owners, institutions and citizens‘ initiatives, had made persevering efforts to achieve their fundamental aim which was, to preserve the historic town-scape and at the same time to revive the original town centre with its cultural and economic significance and to improve its residential conditions.

At the end of 1967 the municipal council focused its policy on decisive accents by adopting the initial planning conception for the restoration of the historic town centre. During the first years, ways and methods of restoration were sometimes rather controversial. Only from the mid-seventies, a common positive basic consense among all parties involved with reconstruction was reached. Since then, the cooperation between public and private measures with an investment volume of approx. 250 mio. EUR received general acceptance and recognition.
