The modernisation led to an improvement of the setting and a revaluation of both living and working in the old part of town.

At first, the opinions about what should be preserved were different between the responsible councilors and the appropriate federal and national ministries. However, in the course of time and with contributions from the "Initiative Restoration of the Historic Town Centre" it was realized that pulling down an old building could only be the last consequence after having considered all other possibilities.

Today you will already notice that in the course of careful detailed investigation several precious buildings have been "rediscovered" and maintained, thus preserving the unique town scape for the future, although some disturbing modern buildings are among them. Today the historic town centre is an active shopping and communication area deserving great admiration as well as a residential area for part of the town's population.

What still remains to be done within the next few years is the restoration and modernization of some individual houses which shall be preserved for future generations and at the same time be put to a good use.
