image comment: view from the Werder to the river WeserIn the west Hameln´s old part of town is bordered by the river Weser. Here, in the centre of Hameln, lies an island named "Werder" in the middle of the river.
In 1999 long-standing plans to make the Werder easier and more direct for pedestrians to reach, and at the same time to create more leisure and relaxational opportunities on the island, were finally realised.

The Werder was reshaped (to create e. g. childrens play areas) and new footpaths were developed. On the island you can find a cafe with an open-air beer garden.
image comment: on the WerderToday the Werder is a popular recreational area enjoyed by the inhabitants of Hameln just as much as being an attraction for tourists.
In good weather many of Hameln´s residents and guests take the opportunity to stroll along the riverside or to sit in the cosy beer garden on the island.
