Public Gardens
image comment: Bürgergarten (Public Gardens)
The "Bürgergarten" is situated on the east side of the old town. The Bürgergarten is the biggest and most important green area in Hameln’s town centre, in addition to the Werder, the small island on the Weser, and it isn’t just enjoyed by tourists but is also used by the inhabitants of Hameln for recreational purposes.
The Bürgergarten was opened in 1962. Previously, the site was used for drill-exercises and then it was the location of the central sports-stadium of Hameln. The oval shape of the Bürgergarten is a clear reminder of its former usage. The new Weserbergland-Stadium was built in south Hameln at "Töneböns Teiche" in the same year.
Throughout the day between April and October water fountains are displayed in the Bürgergarten (11-12 a.m., 3- 4 p.m., 7.30-8.30 p.m.). Within the Bürgergarten are several works of art such as bronze-castings and stone sculptures.
At the south entrance of the Bürgergarten, near the Tourist-Information office, a depiction of the Pied Piper story is embossed on the archway. This relief was made by Walter Ihle in 1960 and was the first monument to show the new interpretation of the legend. The disappearance of the children is attributed to the colonisation of the East and it also signifies the return of displaced refugees in 1945.
