Werder (Island)

The west side of Hamelns old town is bordered by the river Weser. Here, in the centre of Hameln, lies an island in the middle of the river: the Werder.
In 1999 long-standing plans to make the Werder easier and more direct for pedestrians to reach, and at the same time to create more leisure and relaxational opportunities on the island, were finally realised.

Next to the historical Pfortmühle (old mill, now the public library) a bridge connects the old town to the Werder for pedestrians and cyclists.
On the island you can find a cafe with an open-air beer garden. The Werder was reshaped (to create e. g. childrens play areas) and new footpaths were developed.

The end product is a popular new recreational area enjoyed by the inhabitants of Hameln just as much as being a new attraction for tourists.
In good weather many of Hamelns residents and guests take the opportunity to stroll along the riverside or to sit in the cosy beer garden on the island.
